Roach

When UK anglers think of coarse fish, the Roach is likely to be the first fish that comes to mind, and the fish that many anglers first cut their teeth on. Rae and Keith start their quest at Wold Farm Fishery, a very scenic stillwater complex in Bedfordshire on an overcast and blustery spring day. Rae's equipped himself with a new pole and gets some handy tips from Keith on the art of pole fishing before getting started. Keith catches a couple of quick fish but both are having issues with the wind spreading their groundbait around so Keith suggests they use pole mount cup feeders to keep the bait in a concentrated area. The fishing now picks up for both anglers with Keith constantly making subtle changes to his baits and rigs to keep them coming. In the second half of the show, the chaps head to the Great Ouse in Befordshire in mid winter and the river looks in great nick. Its a stretch that Rae regularly fishes and he knows there a lot of smaller 1 and 2 year old class fish here so they'll need all their experience to chop and change to pick up the bigger fish. Its a prolific and enjoyable session for both anglers using maggots as bait but slightly different presentations. If you enjoy Roach fishing, you're sure to enjoy this homage to one of the UK's most popular and obliging coarse fish.

Rae and Keith are targeting Perch this week, one of the most prolific predatory fish in UK waters and they start their quest on the Oak Lake at Alders Farm Fishery in Buckinghamshire. They set up next to each other and discuss tactics before Keith talks Rae through the variety of baits he's brought along. Rae starts with a couple of maggots on a waggler and is focusing on an overhanging tree close in. Both anglers start catching Perch in numbers and there obviously a lot of Perch around but they are struggling to find the bigger ones. Finally Keith hooks a nice Perch but as Rae prepares to net it, the fish slips the hook. Disappointment quickly turns to delight soon after though as Rae lands a lovely Rudd on a medium sized prawn. Rae moves swim in search of a bigger fish but as soon as he's left, Keith lands the best Perch so far and having worked out a formula manages another good sized one. In the second half of the show, the pair visit the Grand Union canal near Tring, on a crisp October morning, and this time are lure fishing for Perch. Whilst Rae uses a spoon, Keith starts on soft plastics using a creature bait that imitates a crayfish. Rae catches a small fish, but Keith isn't having much luck so switches to a small crankbait. Keith catches a lovely specimen near to the bank, before they move down the canal to a boatyard and Keith gets a big surprise when he hooks a double figure Pike.

Its late Spring and Keith and Rae meet up on Smallford Lake, a small gravel pit owned by Verulam Angling Club in St Albans. Tench are on the agenda in this episode and its therefore an early start as these fish are often best targeted in the early mornings and evenings. The lake is well known for having some big Tench in it and despite a little too much sun for Keith's liking, conditions look perfect. Whilst Rae tries the margin, Keith uses a 20ft rod to reach a shelf in open water and he's the first to strike landing a beautiful female specimen. Rae moves to another swim to try his luck but it isn't long before he's called back to help land Keith's second Tench, and its another stunner. In the 2nd part of the show, the pair visit Milton Lake on the Bury Hill Fishery which predominantly holds some beautiful Crucian Carp and Tench, and the pair are hoping for a more prolific session. They set up in adjoining swims and discuss tactics before Rae starts with some luncheon meat as bait on the advice of the fishery owner. Keith is using a pole today and is starts by using expander pellets and it isn't long before he lands a handsome Crucian Carp. Keith continues to land numerous Crucian and a small Tench, but Rae is struggling so decides to fish a little finer and he then too starts to have success. Mr Tench begins to show up now too and the guys enjoy a memorable session at Bury Hill Fishery.
