Our Favourite Fish
(2)

Join Keith Arthur and Rae Borras as they take us on a journey through some of their favourite Coarse fish to catch in the British Isles. Each hour long episode takes the pair to some fantastic waters where they focus on a particular species with Pike, Perch, Roach, Chub, Bream and Tench being their choices in this 6 episode series. Fishing a mixture of lakes, canals and rivers, the pair draw on over 130 years of fishing experience between them to tempt the bigger specimens and they explain just why these fish have a special place in their hearts. The series also features some fantastic underwater footage of each species from well known wildlife cameraman, Jack Perks.

Chub
1:04:56
Old friends Keith Arthur and Rae Borras embark on a campaign fishing for Chub in this instalment of Our Favourite Fish. Undoubtedly one of the most beloved species in the UK, Chub were a trophy capture for both men in their boyhood days. They begin on the Grand Union Canal outside Hemel Hempstead were Rae got his start, float fishing and ledgering maggots around the overhanging trees and riverboats, discussing the best baits, hot spots, the Chub’s life cycle, and sharing stories of trophy captures. We flash forward to a beautiful summers’ day on the pristine pools of the River Stour at Throop Fishery in Dorset. The clear water and blooming weed reveal massive specimens feeding cautiously in the shallow patches of gravel. Rae fishes the bottom in the shade of a tree while Keith explores how to present pellets with a trotting float, bringing great success as he finishes the day on a monster. Eager to do the same, Rae enlists the help of the fishery owner and his knowledge of modern tactics evolving in the world of coarse fishing, and he finally gets his chance at a big Stour Chub.

Roach

1:06:28
When UK anglers think of coarse fish, the Roach is likely to be the first fish that comes to mind, and the fish that many anglers first cut their teeth on. Rae and Keith start their quest at Wold Farm Fishery, a very scenic stillwater complex in Bedfordshire on an overcast and blustery spring day. Rae's equipped himself with a new pole and gets some handy tips from Keith on the art of pole fishing before getting started. Keith catches a couple of quick fish but both are having issues with the wind spreading their groundbait around so Keith suggests they use pole mount cup feeders to keep the bait in a concentrated area. The fishing now picks up for both anglers with Keith constantly making subtle changes to his baits and rigs to keep them coming. In the second half of the show, the chaps head to the Great Ouse in Befordshire in mid winter and the river looks in great nick. Its a stretch that Rae regularly fishes and he knows there a lot of smaller 1 and 2 year old class fish here so they'll need all their experience to chop and change to pick up the bigger fish. Its a prolific and enjoyable session for both anglers using maggots as bait but slightly different presentations. If you enjoy Roach fishing, you're sure to enjoy this homage to one of the UK's most popular and obliging coarse fish.

Pike

Keith and Rae meet up on one of Rae's favourite stretches of the Great Ouse in an area he knows holds plenty of Pike. Its a cold morning and as Keith sets up a rod with a dead bait, whilst Rae decides on a mobile approach seeking out some likely looking spots with his lure rod. Rae finds some small Pike immediately, but the dead bait rod isn't working yet so Keith joins Rae in some lure fishing. Wandering the banks, they meet a local club member, Darren who has is into a fantastic Pike and Keith helps him by netting a cracking twenty pounder. In the second part of this show, Keith arranges for them to meet up with former Tight Lines colleague and fellow Talk Sport presenter, Nigel Botherway, Nigel is an avid Pike angler and has got them onto Orchard Lake in Oxfordshire, a renowned Carp fishery, it is rarely fished for Pike but Nigel knows its a real haven for them. Again the 3 anglers split up, trying a mixture of dead bait and lure methods to find the fish. Plenty of Pike start showing up but can they find a specimen?

Perch

Rae and Keith are targeting Perch this week, one of the most prolific predatory fish in UK waters and they start their quest on the Oak Lake at Alders Farm Fishery in Buckinghamshire. They set up next to each other and discuss tactics before Keith talks Rae through the variety of baits he's brought along. Rae starts with a couple of maggots on a waggler and is focusing on an overhanging tree close in. Both anglers start catching Perch in numbers and there obviously a lot of Perch around but they are struggling to find the bigger ones. Finally Keith hooks a nice Perch but as Rae prepares to net it, the fish slips the hook. Disappointment quickly turns to delight soon after though as Rae lands a lovely Rudd on a medium sized prawn. Rae moves swim in search of a bigger fish but as soon as he's left, Keith lands the best Perch so far and having worked out a formula manages another good sized one. In the second half of the show, the pair visit the Grand Union canal near Tring, on a crisp October morning, and this time are lure fishing for Perch. Whilst Rae uses a spoon, Keith starts on soft plastics using a creature bait that imitates a crayfish. Rae catches a small fish, but Keith isn't having much luck so switches to a small crankbait. Keith catches a lovely specimen near to the bank, before they move down the canal to a boatyard and Keith gets a big surprise when he hooks a double figure Pike.

Bream
53:48
Love them or hate them, Bream are a widespread freshwater fish, found all over the UK in lake, canal and river systems and a firm favourite with match anglers. Living in large shoals, once you find them, you can make hay, so with that in mind Keith and Rae hit the Old Lake at Bury Hill Fisheries. Keith suggests they fish between their bank and an island where's he's sure some shoals will be moving around, and he decides to fish the waggler whilst Rae gets on a feeder set up. After some methodical preparation, the pair start fishing and it isn't long before Keith gets the first fish with a decent Skimmer. Rae gets off and running soon after with a lively 2.5lb fish whilst Keith gives us some useful advice about locating Bream. The odd change of tactics, keeps the fish coming throughout the day and its been a very successful session. In the second part of the show, the guys visit a stretch of the Thames at Beale Park near Reading which recently held the Riverfest match where some huge bags were caught. Under Keith's expert advice they catch a couple of fish but can't find any big shoals so decide to move upstream. With a couple more fish landed, the rain starts to come down and Rae gets a very pleasant surprise when he lands a very chunky Perch.

Tench
48:16
Its late Spring and Keith and Rae meet up on Smallford Lake, a small gravel pit owned by Verulam Angling Club in St Albans. Tench are on the agenda in this episode and its therefore an early start as these fish are often best targeted in the early mornings and evenings. The lake is well known for having some big Tench in it and despite a little too much sun for Keith's liking, conditions look perfect. Whilst Rae tries the margin, Keith uses a 20ft rod to reach a shelf in open water and he's the first to strike landing a beautiful female specimen. Rae moves to another swim to try his luck but it isn't long before he's called back to help land Keith's second Tench, and its another stunner. In the 2nd part of the show, the pair visit Milton Lake on the Bury Hill Fishery which predominantly holds some beautiful Crucian Carp and Tench, and the pair are hoping for a more prolific session. They set up in adjoining swims and discuss tactics before Rae starts with some luncheon meat as bait on the advice of the fishery owner. Keith is using a pole today and is starts by using expander pellets and it isn't long before he lands a handsome Crucian Carp. Keith continues to land numerous Crucian and a small Tench, but Rae is struggling so decides to fish a little finer and he then too starts to have success. Mr Tench begins to show up now too and the guys enjoy a memorable session at Bury Hill Fishery.

Really enjoying these videos made by Keith & Rae. The Bream video is my favourite at the moment. Hopefully they will be filming many more.
