Day One Outdoors Season 3

Opening day of the Salmon season on Buoy 10 fishery, Astoria, at the mouth of the Columbia River, is one of the most exciting days of the year and certainly one of host Cody Herman's red letter days. A million Chinook and Coho will pass through over the next month and it's almost impossible not to catch. This year there is a fairly strong ebb tide so Cody finds a shallow spot and trolls with the current. He and buddies Jarod Higginbotham and Marty Carlson are fishing 2 rods each, so create as big a spread off the boat as possible. They're using an anchovy deadbait combined with spinners and bright feathered lures. Host Cody Herman is on the trip of a lifetime, as he's after blue marlin in Kona Hawaii. He's on board the Benchmark with Capts Chris Donato and Mike Dakil. They carry heavy duty gear, because they are not looking for small fish, they are only after one thing and that's big Blue Marlin. They seem to know what they are doing as well, Cody can barely contain his excitement as they raise, but lose two fish on their first morning's troll. In late winter, where better to spend a day, than the middle of one of the largest lakes in America's North West, exposed to freezing cold winds in the hope of catching a Kokanee or two. Host Cody Herman with buddies Austin Moser and Duane Inglin are doing just that. They're on Lake Roosevelt formed by the Grand Coulee Dam impoundment of the Columbia River. They know that the Kokanee like clear water and are boat shy so they are trolling at distance using as much high-vis terminal tackle as possible, plenty of blades, UV and pink. The Day One Team are back out on Lake Roosevelt for a second day. With lessons learned from their first session, they're targeting the Kokanee for the first few hours, covering as much water as possible using planar boards at three different distances either side of the boat. Marion Lake in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon benefits every year from around 70 volunteers helping to stock it with 10,000 hatchery fish. At 5,000 ft and surrounded by unspoilt forest and mountains it is quite difficult to reach, so all the fish have to be taken by backpack. Host Cody Herman is one of many anglers who make the same trip but with the intention of catching a few of the Rainbow and Brook Trout. Camping beside the lake he and cameraman Samuel Pyke pass on their tips for a successful expedition, which includes cooking the catch on the open campfire. In the 1920's, when netting was banned in the local bay, the fishermen of Pacific City, Oregon switched to surf launched dory boats. They thrived as the commercial fishing fleet until superseded by larger factory style vessels but the tradition has continued and now a handful of dorymen offer their services to sports fishermen. Day One Outdoors host Cody Herman spends a day on the dory of Mike Laverty, who as you would expect  has intimate knowledge of all the marques in the area. They start by targeting bottom feeding fish and immediately land some Lingcod and a few Black Sea Bass, but Mike keeps them on the move and they step up to bigger gear when he puts them on a good Halibut spot. Host Cody Herman admits that he hasn't been Walleye fishing for quite some time. So he relishes the chance to do so on Banks Lake, Washington. It's a water that he doesn't know, so he hooks up with local guide Jordan Osborn and Jarod Higginbotham from Yakima Bait Co. It gives Cody a great opportunity to explain how he assesses a new water, in particular looking at the contours on the bottom to find an area where the fish are likely to be feeding. The guys soon discover that as well as Walleye, there are plenty of Perch to be had.

In Winter when the  Steelhead are still migrating and moving up river, it's difficult to know exactly where to find them. In conditions like this host Cody Herman recommends a couple of techniques 'Side Drifting' where 3 rods cast from the same side of the boat, cover as much water as possible. He's been fishing with his buddies father and son Jack and Brandon Glass for years and they have this down to a fine art. They then switch to 'Bobber Dogging', trotting a float and rig combination downstream on the current. Both techniques prove very effective and at each stage Cody talks us through his rod, reel, line and terminal tackle selection and shows how best to use them. Kokanee are closely related to the Sockeye Salmon. The main difference is that they are non-migratory and spend their whole lives in freshwater, they are also much smaller only growing to around 12". Yale Reservoir in Washington state is full of them, so host Cody Herman teams up with local guide Cameron Black to take us through the basics of how to target Kokanee. He explains rod and reel choice and how to adapt your bait and terminal tackle to suit the conditions found on the day.

Host Cody Herman and the Day One team head off on a winter trip to the Clearwater River in Idaho, looking for Steelhead. Choosing exactly where to fish is always the most important decision of the day and the guys are surprised to find that a spot where an outlet pipe bringing in much warmer water, has no one else fishing, can it be legit? It sure is. They try an assortment of techniques from the boat including bobber doggin' and side drifting. As always Cody carefully talks us through his tactics and choice of lures so we know exactly what's going on every step of the way.

Cody Herman and the Day One team continue their winter trip, fishing for Steelhead on the Clearwater River in Idaho. Not surprisingly, on the second day, they decide that they will revisit the spots and use the same tactics that had worked on the day before. As the water is so cold, once the sun is up they find loads of fish basking in the shallows, its hard work tempting tempting them to bite, but very rewarding when they do.

Host Cody Herman is used to catching Chinook Salmon in the Columbia river system at 45° north, but here he travels 6,000 miles to Puerto Montt, Chile, at 45° south, hoping to find a similar strain of the fish. He's not disappointed as a large number of Chinooks were 'planted' in the 1970's and 80's and have thrived ever since. He starts on the estuary of the river Petrohué, which has a tidal drop of 18 feet and he's trolling spoons and lures. Also in the team is Gary Loomis, founder of the rod manufacturing company and they're in for a treat, as there are some magnificent fish to be caught.

Cody Herman continues his trip to Chile in search of the Chinook Salmon that are similar to those he catches back home on the Columbia River. After a day on the tidal estuary of the Petrohué, he heads up river to the spawning grounds. Again fishing from boats, casting lures into the current seems to work best, but having to use barbless hooks makes actually landing the fish very tricky.

Host Cody Herman and the Day One team are in Chile, fishing for Chinook Salmon. They finish their excursion up the fast flowing head waters of the River Petrohué and spend another day in the estuary. Plenty of fish get away, which make the ones they do catch even more rewarding.

Anchor fishing is a very effective way of targeting Salmon and Steelhead as they migrate upstream. In this double length special, host Cody Herman takes us through all the thought processes involved in successfully selecting the right 'structure' or 'bottleneck' near which to anchor up and how to do so safely and effectively. He also gives a comprehensive run through all aspects of boat management, from how to get your boat off the trailer and into the water, once you've arrived at the ramp to using a drift sock to keep the boat straight.

The Tiger Musky is a hybrid cross of the Northern Pike and the Muskellunge, normally sterile they are used to control fish numbers in certain lakes. As a lean, mean predator they put up a tremendous fight and for host Cody Herman it is one of his bucket list species. He teams up with tournament buddy Josh Marthaller and they gradually come to realise why the Tiger Musky has the nickname, 'Fish of 10,000 casts'.
